“What I Do”
I should start by telling you that I am not a counselor, but I do listen, deeply and with great curiosity, to your human story. A counselor’s first job Is to help you treat a diagnosis. This service has a necessary place among what modern humans may need, but I have only a minor interest in the diagnosis, mainly for any meaning or information it may convey that helps us understand you or your life. A counselor’s second job is to help you function more successfully and adapt to the world. That’s a very reasonable thing to want. However, if you have a yearning for something deeper, please keep reading.
I listen to your human story with a broad and open mind, informed by a blend of disciplines I was fortunate enough to acquire: biology, medicine, clinical and archetypal psychology, astrology, mythology, philosophy, metaphysics, and religion. I listen to your patterns and frequencies, word choices and emotions. I listen for the voice of your true self, which is always present, and I advocate for it, so you can reclaim jurisdiction over your own mind and emotions.
I should also tell you, I am not a coach. Coaching is about solutions and strategies, self-optimization, and getting out of your own way. These are actually all worthy tools adults can use, and it’s useful getting help learning and implementing them. However, I focus on supporting your freedom. If that sounds interesting, please keep reading.
What I mean by freedom is a life lived, by and large, without abstract fear (concrete fear would be fear when faced with an actual charging bear, etc.), shame or resentment. I do not mean license for irresponsibility, where choices are made without consideration or intention. Genuine freedom means our choices are made consciously, with discernment, discipline, and a sense of empowerment. It allows us to take risks, make commitments, and show up in the world with passion and joy.
Does all this sound spiritual? It can be if that calls to you. However it doesn’t have to be because what could be more pragmatic than being free in the world as your authentic self? I would also emphasize that I am not a guru or spiritual teacher, nor do I aspire to be one. That role has been fulfilled many times by great beings in the past. You could view what I do is a compassionate witness, fellow traveler, and sometimes, an inspired messenger – let’s say, part Sherpa, part doula, and a little bit Lady of the Lake. :)
